Momentum over perfection

Do you ever find yourself stuck procrastinating, because you just want to make sure the current thing you are working on is perfect before moving on? It can be hard moving on when you know that there are warts still lurking - even if these warts don't have any real effect on the overall picture.

When I notice it I try and do the following:

  1. I non-judgementally acknowledge that I am in a perfectionistic mode of thinking.
  2. I then make a conscious choice to choose momentum over perfectionism.
  3. I then redirect my focus back to the task at hand.
  4. Once the task is done I then ship it as soon as possible, and move on to the next.

Over the years, I have got much better at focussing on the bigger picture and keeping the momentum going. I think it helps to adopt an iterative mindset - most things don't need to be polished straight away - you always come back to that unpolished thing in a later iteration. Momentum gives us the opportunity to learn and gain new insights which can be used to make things better - perfectionism does the opposite: It stunts the learning process, and keeps us wallowing in our bubble of preconceptions.
