Is it worth learning a new programming language now that AI is here?

Cost of writing code (with AI) is now practically zero. If a coding agent can write code for you in any language, do we really need to learn a new language? What would be the point?

In order to validate the output of AI, we have to know what we are looking at. To do this we have to have a decent understanding of the syntax and paradigms at play. However, most languages have large crossovers with other languages. So, to answer the question - I would only learn a new language if I get to learn:

  • A new syntax.
  • A new paradigm.

I would go further and say you don't really need to learn the whole language, you can just learn the bits that are fundamentally different. For instance, if you know Java, you can probably work with an AI to review most Rust code: they are both C-family languages and use types. However, the fundamental difference with Rust is that it doesn't use a garbage collector, and instead uses a borrow checker. So if you know Java you only really need to understand the borrow checker to get yourself going. You can ask an AI agent to explain everything else as you go along.
